The item
We are offering three vintage hand-crafted, turned and oiled wood items, which are all uniquely one-of-a-kind. They comprise a good-sized vase with a minuscule miniature version and a delightful candle holder featuring a rugged bark element.
If you've already visited our Ebay shop you'll be aware that we know more about elderly ceramics and glass than hand-turned wood, but we've done our best to research these items so as to do justice to this impressive vintage craftsmanship in our description, which we hope will be helpful to buyers.
Judging by the beautiful natural patterning on the large vase (and mini) we think it has been fashioned out of Spalted Maple. The base carries the carved name of the maker, 'Chai', a moniker associated with a well-established British woodturner, Mike Scott, whose work is considered collectable art and has appeared in specialist galleries. It is dated 26.7.86.
The extremely miniature (and very cute) vase is believed to have come from the same hand.
The charming single candleholder (possibly in ash or elm?) makes use of the rugged bark of the tree to contrast with the light grain.We know this was crafted by a Mr P A Smith, of Errol Hut Woodwork, in Northumberland, England because the original maker's sticker still sits on the base. We have been unable to track down this company, but we note there is a Paul Smith, who still works with wood, in the same postcode area.
Condition
We note that the vase celebrates its 40th birthday later this year and we suspect that because the candleholder came from the same source that it will enjoy a similar vintage. Both remain in very good condition. We just note that there is a small indentation on the side of the vase and a similar issue on the base rim, but both appear to have been oiled so we assume they have been there since 'birth'? Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have actually been sold for on the international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!
You will normally find that our prices sit somewhere in the middle between auction and professional dealer prices although they're difficult to value because of their unique nature. And we are always willing to consider realistic offers.
In this case we'd like to find a good home for these superbly crafted pieces so we are offering them at what we think is a competitive price for 20th Century wood-turned pieces of art.
