19th century AE Roman Catholic religious medal of
Saint Joseph & Guardian Angel
This small 20mm oval-shaped AE medal was struck in the 19th
century and worn by Roman Catholic devotees for reverence to Saint Joseph, plus
protection from the Guardian Angel depicted on the reverse.
Obverse: Bearded Saint Joseph in profile, identifiable by his traditional
attributes: a lily branch (symbolizing purity) and an axe (referencing his
trade as a carpenter). "S. JOSEPH MODÈLE DE PURETÉ PRIEZ POUR NOUS,"
which translates to "St. Joseph, model of purity, pray for us".
Reverse: A winged Guardian Angel guiding a young child. The angel's protective
stance, with one hand raised and the other holding the child's hand, is a
traditional representation of spiritual guidance. "Ô S. ANGE GARDIEN SOYEZ
MON GUIDE," which translates to "O Holy Guardian Angel, Be My
Guide".
Condition: Collector’s grade with a really pleasing even coloured
antique patina, top suspension loop is missing.
