1837 Victoria Cumberland Jack To Hanover political satire
brass jeton token counter
This bright brass 22mm collectible jeton or playing counter
token was struck in 1837 to address the incoming Queen Victoria’s dilemma at
not being able to fulfil her role as King of Hanover under Salic Law due to
being female.
Historical background: The history behind these pieces is that when Victoria was
crowned as Queen, she was unable to fulfil the role of King of Hanover under
Salic Law, due to the fact that she was a female.
Her unpopular Uncle (Ernest Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland)
who was the oldest male heir to the throne was sent off to Hanover instead to
fulfil the role, and the counters/tokens were produced to commemorate
(celebrate) his departure.
Obverse: bust of Victoria to left
Lettering: VICTORIA REGINA
Reverse: Duke of Cumberland on horseback rides to right
Lettering:
TO HANOVER
1837
Condition: Collector’s grade for this popular type with a pleasing
uncleaned mix of bright mint lustre and toned antique patina as seen.
