Rare 1744 Queen Anne Sun in Splendour Nuremberg Jeton by Magnus Gottlieb Laufer

This rare to find small 20mm AE "Rechenpfennig" or "counter token," was originally used as a tool for calculations on a counting board before becoming common as gaming tokens. It was struck in Nuremberg by guild master Magnus Gottlieb Laufer in the mid-18th century circa 1744–1768.

 

Obverse: portrait is of Queen Anne of Great Britain (reigned 1702–1714), shown in profile facing left. ANNA D • G • M • B • F • ET H • REG •.

Translation: "Anne, by the Grace of God, Queen of Great Britain, France, and Ireland"

 

Reverse: a plant basking in the sunshine fruit tree on a grassy ground with a radiant sun depicted with a face shining above it. RECHENPFENNIG in exergue: M.G.I.

 

Condition: Collector’s high grade with an uncleaned natural antique slightly patchy patina on the reverse as seen.
