MAGNIFICENT ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR SEASCAPE

ARTHUR SUKER (1857-1902)

DIMENSIONS

About 17" x 27 1/2" sight size.  28 1/2" x 39 3/4" overall

DESCRIPTION

Wonderful original watercolor seascape of crashing surf pounding against the rocky cliffs off the coast of Cornwall, England, with sea birds wheeling about in the air.  Rugged rocky cliffs jutting into a churning sea.  Atmosphere suggests an approaching or passing storm with sunlight breaking through the clouds. Signed lower left with Suker's very recognizable signature.  Glazed and framed with a molded and gilded wooden frame and a gilt mat.

Arthur Suker is best known for his dramatic seascape and landscape paintings. He was the brother of Frederick 'Fred' Clive Newcombe, who adopted a pseudonym to distinguish himself from his father, John Suker, and his brother, Arthur, all of whom were artists. He was also first cousin to the well known artist and illustrator, Walter Crane (1845-1915). Suker was born in mid 1857 at Tranmere, Cheshire.  By 1871 he was living with his large family in Birkenhead and is recorded as a scholar in art.  He married Emily Tomlinson early in 1881 and at the time of the census they were boarding at a lodging house in Whitby. In their early married life they appear to have moved around many times, living in Chester 1882, Liverpool 1883, Merton, Surrey 1886, before settling in Cornwall by 1890. Arthur is listed in the 1891 Census as an 'Artist-Landscape Painter', married to Emily, and their home was at Tregiffian Vean, St Just in Penwith.
