WONDERFUL 3-GALLON STONEWARE JUG
G. S. GUY
DIMENSIONS
About 18" tall x 10" diameter.
DESCRIPTION
Stamped with cobalt highlighting "G. S. GUY / FORT EDWARD, N. Y. / 3," indicating 3-gallon size jug. Some faint under-the-glaze paint in large letters reads "JUG / -ENN," probably indicating the jug was intended for a merchant client in Pennsylvania. (Some image manipulation helped to reveal the letters clearly.)
G. S. Guy was a producer of salt-glazed stoneware, operating in Fort Edward ca. 1875-1883. Some time after 1875, George S. Guy purchased the company from the Tilson Brothers, and it remained in operation under that name until it was purchased by the Hilfinger brothers around 1883.
CONDITION
Overall excellent. Small hairlines around the neck and handle (all visible in the images). A RARE AND UNUSUAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK STONEWARE JUG.
