The quintessential Humble Pie band was comprised of guitarist/vocalist Steve Marriott formerly with the Small Faces, guitarist/vocalist Peter Frampton formerly with the Herd, bassist Greg Ridley formerly with Spooky Tooth and drummer Jerry Shirley who has been in groups such as Fastway, Magnet, Natural Gas and Apostolic Intervention.

Peter Frampton was a co-founder of Humble Pie with Steve Marriot, but by the time of that the Smokin’ album was happening Frampton had left for a solo career which would ultimately prove to be an enormous success with the release of the groundbreaking live album Frampton Comes Alive which would go on to be one of the most celebrated live albums in rock history and a precedence for successful live rock albums.

Replacing Peter Frampton on guitar and vocals and bringing keyboards into the fold for the Smokin’ album was British guitarist and keyboardist Dave “Clem” Clempson. Clempson has played with some great bands such as Barkerloo and Colosseum, but also has been in the back up band for many solo acts such as Bob Dylan, Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), Cozy Powell (MSG, Pat Travers...), Roger Chapman (Streetwalkers) , Jack Bruce (Cream) and Jon Anderson (Yes). Clem Clempson’s greatest asset as a guitarist was his immense versatility and ability to seamlessly blend blues-rock with jazz fusion and progressive styles, making him a highly sought-after player for various genres. His technical prowess, particularly his tone and emotive solos, was frequently highlighted during his time with Colosseum and Humble Pie. So, while Clempson had some big boots to fill, he was definitely the right man for the job!

Smokin’ was released in 1972 on the independent A&M Records label. Smokin’ captures the raw live energy of Humble Pie in the studio. Smokin’ is considered by many to be a masterpiece which leans more to a hard charging soulful boogie blues rock and showcases Steve Marriot’s iconic vocals. Smokin’ peaked at #6 on the US Billboard 200 and contains one of the band’s most well known iconic song ‘Thirty Days in The Hole’ Other notable tracks on the album include ‘Hot ‘n’ Nasty’ and ‘C’mon Everybody’ Humble Pie would break up only a year after the Smokin’ album hit the shelves , but would go on to influence a generation of hard rock & blues artists such as Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, AC/DC, Rival Sons and even Van Halen! Marriott and Shirley briefly reformed the group in the ‘80s and released two albums On To Victory (1980) and Go For The Throat (1981) The band toured the US in 1980 as part of the “Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon” tour with Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Angel, and Mother’s Finest. They also toured with Ted Nugent and Aerosmith in 1981, but Humble Pie would ultimately disband again permanently in late 1981 following a series of personal issues for Marriott, including a hand injury and other health problems, as well as the loss of their recording contract.
