A fantastic rare “naturalist” piece by Rowland Ward & Co of Piccadilly, London.
James Rowland Ward (1848–1912) was a world-renowned British taxidermist.The address on your item, 166 Piccadilly, refers to Ward's famous London showroom and workshop known as "The Jungle". He moved his studios to this location in 1879.
While primarily known for mounting big-game trophies for royalty and explorers (including Winston Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt), the firm also produced "Wardian furniture"—practical items made from animal parts, such as horse-hoof inkwells, elephant-foot umbrella stands, and antler furniture.
Condition as displayed in photographs. This piece is ideal for restoration ( which is why I bought the piece many years ago but never got round to it)
Kept in dark and dry conditions for storage. These are personal items that have either been in storage in a loft or watertight storage area.
Sold as part of downsizing exercise these pieces come from various vintage collections collected or gifted to me over the years.
