Historic Meteorite Fall


The Allende meteorite fell near the village of Pueblito de Allende on February 8, 1969, when a massive fireball illuminated the skies across northern Mexico and the southwestern United States.


Thousands of meteorite fragments were scattered across a strewn field covering roughly 50 square kilometers. The fall quickly attracted scientific attention, and extensive studies were conducted by researchers from NASA and the Smithsonian Institution.


With a total recovered mass of more than 2 metric tons, Allende remains the largest carbonaceous chondrite fall in history.

Allende meteorites are famous for containing abundant CAIs (Calcium-Aluminum-rich Inclusions). These inclusions are among the oldest solid materials formed in the solar system, dating back approximately 4.567 billion years.
