A stun gun is an electrical self-defense device that delivers a high-voltage, low-amperage charge intended to temporarily disable an attacker. When the device’s prongs make contact with a person, the electrical current disrupts normal muscle function, causing immediate loss of voluntary control and making it difficult for the attacker to continue their actions. Because the amperage is extremely low, the device is designed to incapacitate rather than cause serious or permanent injury.
Stun guns work by interfering with the body’s natural electrical signals. The brain normally sends pulse signals through the nervous system to control muscle movement. A stun gun introduces a powerful external electrical charge that overrides these signals at the nerve synapses—junctions that act as communication points between nerves and muscle groups. This disruption prevents the muscles from responding normally to the brain’s commands, leading to temporary loss of coordination, confusion, and difficulty maintaining balance. As a result, the attacker may become disoriented and unable to function effectively for several minutes. Stun guns are designed to affect the neuromuscular system and typically do not have a significant impact on the heart or other vital organs.
The effects generally increase with the duration of contact. A brief contact of about half a second may startle or repel an attacker, causing pain and minor muscle contraction. Contact lasting one to two seconds can produce stronger muscle spasms and a dazed mental state. Contact for three seconds or more may result in greater loss of balance, reduced muscle control, and increased confusion or disorientation.
In a self-defense situation, the primary objective is to stop the threat and create an opportunity to move to safety. The device should be used only as long as necessary to disengage from the attacker and seek help. The electrical discharge from a stun gun is localized to the area of contact and does not transfer from the person being stunned to the individual using the device.
