Ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic period faience shabti C. 1st century BC - 50 AD

Description:

During the Ptolemaic to early Roman transition, these faience shabtis served as funerary figurines designed to perform manual labour for the deceased in the afterlife. Characterised by a glassy, often turquoise or pale green glaze, these late-period examples typically feature a "back pillar" where a vertical column of hieroglyphs identifies the owner and recites Spell 6 of the Book of the Dead. Despite the shift toward Greco-Roman influence in Egypt, these shabtis maintained traditional iconography -including the shaved head or tripartite wig and agricultural tools - reflecting a persistent commitment to ancient Osirian burial rites.
