W. & A. K. Johnston's Series of History Maps: England before the Norman Conquest. No. 2.Natural Scale 1:830,000. The map measures c. 29.5 x 39.5 inches when full out; c. 9.5 x 9.5 inches when folded.Shows Religious Houses and Battle Sites.Metal rings at the top for hanging purposes. These have left imprint marks halfway down the map in the margins and similarly in the margins faintly at the bottom. Other than that the map is in excellent condition. Cloth backed and dissected. When folded the map has red shiny cloth (?) covers front and back; the front of these covers has some scuffed areas - see photos. Drawn and lithographed by W. & A. K. Johnston Limited, Edinburgh. The map is undated, and the only clues are in the 'Limited', which means it is post 1897, and the fact that the company ceased to operate under the Johnston name in the 1960s. I've been unable to find any examples of these maps from the Series of History, or any information about them. I'd imagine they are probably 1920s or 1930s? I have many more that I will be listing in the coming days.
