DESCRIPTION New York & New Haven Railroad – Assistant Superintendent’s Office Request for Funds – March 30, 1865 Signed by E. S. Quintard, Assistant Superintendent A scarce internal railroad operations document dated March 30, 1865, written on the ornate “ASST. SUPT’S OFFICE – New York & New Haven Rail Road Company” letterhead featuring an early engraved steam locomotive vignette. Addressed to W. Bennett, Esq., who at this date was serving as an assistant / treasury financial officer within the company. In this request, Assistant Superintendent E. S. Quintard asks that $500 in disbursements for the month of March be forwarded. Such documents reflect the day-to-day movement of cash required to operate the railroad during the final month of the Civil War. This is a fine example of internal railroad correspondence showing the functioning chain-of-command within the operating side of the railroad. FULL TRANSCRIPTION ASST. SUPT’S OFFICE New York & New Haven Rail Road Company. New Haven, Mch 30th 1865 W. Bennett Esq., Sir, Please send me $500 on a/c of March disbursements. Yours Respectfully, E. S. Quintard Asst. Supt. Reverse: E. S. Quintard a/c March 30 / 65 HISTORICAL CONTEXT By 1865, the New York & New Haven Railroad had been in operation for over a decade, providing the primary rail connection between Manhattan and New England. The Assistant Superintendent’s role was operational — overseeing day-to-day train movement, station oversight, crew assignment, and revenue distribution along the line. E. S. Quintard (often appearing in records as Ephraim S. Quintard) served in several administrative roles with the line during the 1860s. The handwritten request to William Bennett reflects Bennett’s position handling treasury and financial disbursements in New Haven and New York offices. The date is notable: March 30, 1865 — just one week before the end of the Civil War. Railroads like NY&NH played essential roles in troop transport, mail, and supply routing during the conflict. Operational paperwork from wartime months is scarcer and especially desirable.
It measures approx. 6" x 7 3/4"
