KUIU Storm Star 2P - 9.5mm Replacement Tent Poles
Pro-Flex - 9.5mm 7001-T6 alloy tent poles 

These tent poles are a direct replacement for damaged or broken DAC poles that come as standard with the Storm Star 2P.  For some reason, unknown to us, there does seem to be an issue with the original DAC poles on this tent failing as we are now getting regular requests to make up new poles specifically for the Storm Star 2P.

Whether this is simply down to the extreme conditions that this tent is used in or a bad batch of DAC poles, we don't know. However, due to the apparent lack of availability of replacement DAC tent poles, we are in a position to provide our 9.5mm 7001-T6 alloy poles as a direct replacement.

Tent Pole Mystery Solved:

Initially we thought that it must be a bad batch of DAC poles, but now, after conversing with a customer, it is clear that the wrong (unsuitable) poles have been supplied with the KUIU Storm Star. The pole choice has shaved a few grams off the total tent weight, but to the great detriment of the overall performance of the tent.

The KUIU tent, even by its name Storm Star, is clearly designed to be an all-weather, all season tent… but herein lies the problem.  KUIU have supplied the Storm Star with the lightest (and weakest) DAC NFL poles. DAC save weight on the NFL poles by reducing the wall thickness, but this 'featherlite' weight-saving comes at a cost. The tent would fare far better with the stronger DAC NSL 9mm or 9.6mm poles. Hilleberg for example use DAC NSL 9mm on many of their 1 and 2 person all season tents, often with the option of upgrading to 10.2mm NSL poles – I don't think Hilleberg uses the lighter NFL featherlite poles at all, which is probably telling.

A full set of our replacement poles includes:

2 x 160 inch (4064mm) poles
1 x 146 inch (3708mm) pole

These poles all come with the appropriate end stops designed to slide in to sleeves on the KUIU tent. All replacement tent poles come ready made and include the end stops and shock cord.

Available as a individual poles or set of three. Replacement sections for OUR 9.5mm poles are also available - they won't fit the original DAC poles!

Our Pro-Flex replacement tent poles are made from 7001 aluminium alloy and tempered to T6 standard. 7001-T6 aluminium alloy is generally regarded as the best aluminium alloy for lightweight tent poles providing the best balance between weight and strength. This aluminium alloy is pretty much the standard used in all high quality, high-end tents, including such as Terra Nova and Hilleberg, which use Korean company DAC tent poles. That said, DAC do however use their own proprietary derivative of 7001 aluminium alloy tempered to T8 (TH72M) for their tent poles.
 
In reality the performance difference between DAC’s 7001-T8 aluminium alloy and the more standard 7001-T6 aluminium alloy is marginal, and in more cases than not, the lower cost standard 7001-T6 aluminium alloy will perform equally as well under most conditions, particularly as DAC poles can have thinner walls to reduce weight. 7001-T6 alloy is used in the manufacture of tent poles because it has an excellent strength to weight ratio and a high yield rate – that is the amount it can flex before being permanently deformed.
 
Now, whereas the likes of DAC manufacture various versions of lightweight tent poles, using various non-standard manufacturing techniques to shave off grams and so reduce the overall weight of their poles, this also means that you will specifically need DAC pole sections to replace broken DAC tent poles, as only they will fit. Unfortunately sourcing DAC pole sections is not always that easy. With this in mind we have stuck to the more universal tent pole size and construction, which means that poles and indeed sections are readily available if ever required.
