Welcome to my listing for:
1900 Receipt for House Repair Day Labor for Geo. Rogers Estate Cambridge, MA
When George M. Rogers (1820-1889) passed away, he had left behind an impressive Boston / Cambridge area real estate portfolio acquired mostly in the 1870’s-80’s and in the only (very short) obituary notice I found, wrote that he was considered “one of the wealthiest residents of the city” (in 1893, G.M.’s estate was included in a list of top property taxpayers in Cambridge - those whom paid more than $2,000 in property tax - (his bill was over $3,300) Yet, despite his stature, there were virtually no details of his life's work in any obituary or history resource that I could find in my search. The earliest newspaper articles and ads related to Mr. Rogers began in 1858 in an ad for a “Furniture and Feather store” at 21 Salem street in Boston. In 1866 had him offering pigs, horses and wagons for sale. In 1868 the first mention of his real estate rental business, he offered a five room flat with gas and water included on Tyler street for $30 a month. In 1872, he purchased 7 acres and 9 rods of land and buildings on Old Country road for $1,150. Apparently, after his death, the real estate holdings were not greatly - if at all, sold off. They were managed initially as a trustee by Mr. Leslie S. Rogers (son?) The estate remained intact and issued payments well into the 1930’s. The ephemera offered in this listing came out of a very large collection of local daily / weekly labor payments, utility, tax and merchant billhead receipts that covered copious work performed and goods purchased related to several estate-owned properties located in and around the Boston / Cambridge Area. The collection was very well protected. The sheets were stored, nearly all uniformly folded only once and tightly bundled by month - and untouched for well over 100 years. With few exceptions, the edges and corners are sharp, the paper is crisp and the printing is vibrant and mostly without any major condition issues.
All showing minor, if any signs of wear and handling consistent with its age. Few, if any tears, creases or any other major issues to note. Clean. All text are legible. Overall, all in good to very good condition. Will display well in your collection. You will receive the exact sheet shown in the photos. The largest sheet measures approx. 6 3/4" x 8 3/4"
