Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a classic 1st generation (1950's era) Electro Voice 664 dynamic cardioid microphone. Often referred to as "The Buchanan Hammer" salesman would demonstrate it's toughness and reliability by pounding nails into a piece wood with the mic then hooking it up to show that it would still work without issue. This microphone was not used as a hammer...obviously but does show signs of wear from being used over the decades. It comes with a vintage 4 pin cable in which to operate.
Pic # 3 shows the E.V data sheet with all the basic characteristics of this mic. It's not included however.
The 664 was a revolutionary mic being tough, reliable, great sounding and having a uni-directional pattern only picking up what was directly in front of the microphone cancelling out all background noise. It was the standard for all other mics of it's era and sounds as good as most quality mics built today if the 664 is in good working order.
This 664 has been thoroughly cleaned, tested and gone over. You'll have no issues with any mics I sell. It should be noted that these mics do have a slew of issues if they have not been refurbished and the cables are almost always shot but I take care of all of these problems before listing them.
This particular mic is in perfect working condition and currently set at Low impedance giving you a smooth, warm tone that's got just the right amount of of bass. This will be ideal for general broadcasting or singing purposes. If you want a 664 with an old school "rockabilly" tone then I would suggest buying a 664 set at High Impedance. If you want a 664 with more bass and a warmer tone then a Low impedance mic is the way to go. Again, this is set for Low Z and the signal strength is 100%.
Buyers beware...these chromed bodies DO NOT polish out. If there is pitting, scratches or engravings they do not come out. Don't be fooled thinking they will look like new once the damage is done as many sellers are claiming.
The polished chrome body on this 664 shows typical lite wear but certainly above average condition. No engravings or dents. Just several lite scratches and scuff marls here and there but any physical wear on this mic is very hard to see from even a couple feet or away. The 664 label looks very nice as well. The front screen has no deformation or odors. Just very lite tarnish.
I would rate this mic a conservative 7 physically speaking on a scale of 1 - 10.
This 664 has a new foam inner pop filter under the front screen to cut down on unwanted "pops" from breathing or windy conditions. The joint mechanism works perfectly with plenty of tension and it's adjustable via side screw. The on / off switch was cleaned and works just as it should and slides smoothly. The threading for the cable and stand are perfect...nothing stripped or fractured.
There is a short 9 foot screw on cable included to operate this mic. The cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. It has the quality Switchcraft male XLR end connector that will allow you to use any other XLR cable of length as an extension to your audio equipment if needed. I had to completely rebuild this cable and it's good for anther 50 + years. This 664 is ready to go for any situation you find yourself in.
The mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
As with all my other vintage microphones...
