1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar, a U.S. silver commemorative coin. It was minted to raise funds for carving a monument honoring Confederate soldiers on Stone Mountain in Georgia.
Coin Details
- Composition: The coin is made of 90% silver and 10% copper. Its actual silver weight is approximately 0.3617 troy ounces.
- Design:
- Obverse (front): Features equestrian figures of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, with the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" above them and "STONE MOUNTAIN" and the date "1925" below them. The designer was Gutzon Borglum, who later sculpted Mount Rushmore.
- Reverse (back): Depicts an eagle perched on a mountain crag, surrounded by text including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR", with "MEMORIAL TO THE VALOR OF THE SOLDIER OF THE SOUTH" inscribed to the left.
- Mintage: All were struck at the Philadelphia Mint without a mint mark. A net mintage of just over 1.3 million coins were distributed.
