The item
We are listing a lovely authentic example of a 1930s English Art Deco glass 'Boudoir Set' which would still grace any dressing table.
It was made by one of England's premier glass manufacturers of the period, Bagley, at their works in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, England. Sets like this captured the optimistic mood of the Art Deco period with its bright colours and attractive shapes and was affordable for hard-pressed working families.
Like most art glass, this set responds attractively to light, appearing as pale green in soft daylight, but becoming a stunning vivid green under artificial light as our images show. They're not fashioned out of uranium glass (i.e. they don't glow under UV), but the pictures show how flurescent they can be.
It comprises a gorgeous tray, two candlesticks, a large lidded bowl and two smaller lidded bowls...all matching in the 'swirling' Rutland 3078 design.
This set is a delightful survivor and it's amazing to think that it's only around ten years away from achieving official antique status. It's always wonderful to come across moulded glassware like this in such condition and still a complete set; glass gets damaged and broken over the decades, so much so that you'll usually find individual pieces from sets like this being sold individually.
Condition
In spite of being around 90 years old, it is in very good condition i.e. no chips or cracks or even the usual nibbles around the edges often found with popular art glass from this period.
Pricing
Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have actually been sold for on the international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!
You will normally find that our prices sit somewhere in the middle between auction and professional dealer prices and we are always willing to consider realistic offers.
Shipping
We have a 100pc success rate for over a decade of successfully shipping fragile ceramics and glassware across the UK and the wider World.
We only charge what the Post Office and couriers charge us.
International shipping? Since Covid, we have started to use eBay's Global Shipping Programme because it has proved to be competitive and reliable and the service includes handling the paperwork, which is very useful for buyer and seller at a time of confusing World tariffs..
