* Although there are 2 pairs available, the list price is only for 1 pair (2
hinges) & 20 screws.
The
first 3 photos show Pair#1 and the next 3 show Pair#2
* Since we took the 6 photos outside on a cloudy day, we
included the last photo which shows both pairs under incandescent lighting to
give you an idea of how they would look inside.
Heavy-duty, antique door hinges salvaged from an old home in
Western NY. They were made by "Stanley Works" of New Britain, CT sometime
during the first quarter of the previous century.
Each hinge is made of solid, heavy, thick forged steel and plated
with a thick layer of bronze. One of the hinges in Pair#2 has a lot of
worn/missing plating. They have 2 halves, 5 knuckles with 2 ball-bearing
bushings, and ball-shaped finials on both ends. Combined, both hinges weigh almost 3
lbs!
The hinges also come with 20, thick, flathead screws.
At the point of salvage, we found the hinges unpainted and with
minimal patina (tarnish).
If you prefer a newer, cleaner look, apply some "Brasso" and
scrub the surface of the hinges using #00 or #0000 grade steel wool to polish
them up to a brilliant shine.
Considering that the hinges are at least 100 years old, they are
in great condition. They have nicks and scratches--what you would expect to find
on old hardware. However, there are no breaks, cracks, gouges, or chips. The
hinges are perfectly straight, the pins slide out easily, the hinges themselves
open and close effortlessly.
Unlike the hinges made today, which you could buy at your local
hardware store; these hinges are thicker, heavier, and stronger. They are made
of pure, solid, forged steel, not a cheap composite or alloy, and were built to
last a lifetime. If you are planning on using these hinges to hang a new door,
it's a very good chance that you'll end up replacing the door before the hinges!
