Old Hall stainless steel products are synonymous with the stylish 1960s and 70s and were on everyone's wedding present list during this time.
We are listing a really interesting survivor from this period, the 'Oriana' Tea Set, which is linked to Old Hall winning a huge contract from P & O Orient Lines for the supply of all the stainless steel tableware for the new luxury liner 'SS Oriana', launched in November 1959.
The set was designed by Robert Welch. The 'Oriana' range, without the additional weighting required for onboard stability, was very successfully marketed in the catering trade and incorporated into the standard Old Hall product catalogue in the early 1960s.
We are offering a lovely example of this range. It is close to being of iconic status, but it's not just for show...it's still a solid, working tea set.
In spite of its age and use it has survived well. This is unsurprising given the quality and inbuilt resilience of Old Hall. The company ceased production in 1985 and Old Hall is now a much collected brand by vintage and retro collectors.
The set, modelled out of subtle satin finish stainless steel, comprises a 1pt tea pot, water jug, sugar bowl and milk jug and unusually it includes a tray. All five pieces carry the same correct makers mark for the period (see images).
Condition
Old Hall satin finish stainless steel is robust as well as stylish and the tea set is without any damage i.e. no large dents or even smaller dings. All we notice, under close scrutiny and under the camera spot lights, is some age and use related light scratches, to be expected after some 60 years. But it still retains its unmistakeable 1960s 'look' as the mages show.
Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have actually been sold for on the international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!
