This original military map comes from a large batch of German and Japanese examples captured by the US Army during WW2. They were assessed, processed and held by the US ARMY MAP SERVICE before eventually being donated to a prominent University. After more than 60 years in their archives, the maps were recently 'deaccessioned' and offered for sale. Most have official military ink stamps of some kind or other, but none of them were ever stamped by the University.
The example offered here is a "LUFTWAFFE" adapted version of a "DEUTSCHE HEERESKARTE" (German Army Map) of Italy entitled "BARI - TARENT". TARANTO (TARENT in German) was a key naval port on the South coast of Italy.
It's a "FLIEGERAUSGABE" (AERONAUTICAL EDITION) sheet, featuring the wide pink numbered grid used by the Luftwaffe. This grid has been overprinted on the original Army edition, allowing it to be used by both services.
It's headed "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch" (equivalent to a "RESTRICTED" British military map) and was printed in August 1943 in anticipation of the Allied Invasion of Italy.
