Toronto Metros were a professional soccer team which participated in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1971-74, playing their home matches at Varsity Stadium. The Metros best season was 1973, when they won the Northern Division, but lost in the playoffs semi-finals to Philadelphia. After the ’74 season, 50% of the team was purchased by the Toronto Croatia of the National Soccer League (NSL), with the team being renamed Toronto Metros-Croatia.
North American Soccer League (NASL) was a professional soccer league which operated from 1968 to 1984, popularizing the sport in the United States and Canada. The NASL received substantial attention by attracting major international stars such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Gerd Muller and George Best, which assisted in elevating the profile of soccer in geographic locales dominated by other team sports.
During its peak in the late '70s and early '80s, the NASL fielded teams in virtually all major North America cities, laying down the groundwork for awareness and growth of professional soccer on the continent. The trailblazing league was integral in establishing a foundation for the Major League Soccer (MLS), which launched in 1996, and has since gone on to become the premier soccer league in the region.
