One of the most breathtaking sights a person can witness is the powerful launch of a rocket into space, whether experienced in person or, more commonly, watched on a screen. After the success of NASA's Apollo program, the next step in space exploration was the creation of a partially reusable, low-Earth orbit space transportation system. This would enable more astronauts to travel into space and push the boundaries of engineering even further.
To make this spacecraft system work as planned, one million individual components had to operate flawlessly together. Over a span of 30 years, five Space Shuttles successfully reached Earth orbit, with 'Discovery' becoming the most active of the fleet. This remarkable shuttle completed 39 missions and spent a total of 365 days in space.
