Postcard Stamp Design Great American Women Annie Oakley
known as "Little Sure Shot," Annie Oakley was born into an impoverished family in rural Ohio. As a child, Oakley hunted game and sold it to Cincinnati restaurants. She was so successful that she was able to,pay off the mortgage on her family's house. At the age of fifteen, Oakley defeated well-known marksman Frank Butler in a shooting contest. The two fell in love and were married the next year. For much of their fifty-year marriage, the couple toured the United States and Europe giving shooting exhibitions. Oakley became the star attraction of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, for which she performed for seventeen years. Oakley gained worldwide fame by executing feats such as shoot he ash from a cigarette in someone's mouth -- a trick she performed on Kaiser Wilhelmina II -- and shooting an apple from the head of her dog, Dave. Known for her generosity, Oakley dedicated a great portion of,her earnings to helping orphans and widows, as well as financially assisting young women who could not afford an education.
