ACEO Linocut large beetle with a star on a brown piece of cardstock.
Linocut (or lino print) is a relief printmaking technique where the artist carves their design into a piece of linoleum lino block (think big eraser) and printing it with ink.
The artist typically sketches their design onto paper and then transfers the image to the block using graphite paper. The artist then carves the image out using a gouge and other lino tools. The artist periodically checks (proofs) their work by applying a thin layer of ink to see how it looks. Once the piece is done and inked, the artist then lays a piece of paper on the block and then uses a spoon to apply pressure.
This is all done by hand.
