- Mexican folk art is a tin
sign which is handmade and hand painted done in a retablo style.
- The words and picture
are all hand painted directly onto the tin.
- The artwork features a bright
red devil with a long tail dancing and smoking pot and drinking with a man.
There is a skeleton dog in the room. The girlfriend is looking through the
window with worried eyes.
- Mexico’s Patron Saint,
the Virgin of Guadalupe, in the cloud.
- The words are loosely
translated as follows:
- “Jelipe
[the girlfriend looking in the window] once dreamed that the devil came to him [the
boyfriend] and they went out partying. Since that dream, he hasn't lacked his
vices: alcohol and marijuana. Now at night, Jelipe goes out with the devil and
they continue partying. Virgin of Guadalupe, take care of my neighbor and
friend, s/ Jelipe Gomez Garcia.”
- The tin sign measures 11-1/4
inches across x just under 8-3/4 inches in height.
- Colors are bold and
bright.
- This is an original
piece of artwork, bought from the artist's family in Mexico City.
- The piece of tin used
is not rigid. There may be light and camera shadows showing in the photo of the
back of the tin.
- Because this is a
handmade piece of art on a piece of scrap metal and because of the type of art,
the artist intended irregularities, uneven edges, slight bends in the tin, some
rust, scratches and paint splotches.
