HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

This flag was manufactured specifically for Soviet ships of the Vladimir Mezentsev type, which entered the Jordanian port of Aqaba during the 1970s–1980s.

The flag is made of traditional naval wool fabric, known as “flagtuch” — a rare, worsted wool used exclusively for maritime flags since the 15th‑century Dutch naval tradition.

The dyes were applied using the “cold batik” method, historically used on naval flags for centuries. Color boundaries are separated with thin lines of drying oil to preserve clarity and contrast.

CONDITION & FEATURES

• The flag shows excellent preservation for its age
• A sheet of white office paper was photographed next to the flag to demonstrate the richness of the green and the deep black colors
• The natural wool stripe displays a noble, authentic tone
• Minor small stains are present but do not affect the visual appearance (all shown in photos)

Professional maritime construction details include:

• Reinforced stitched corners
• Additional fabric overlays at the luff
• Strong canvas luff
• Original halyards for fastening
• All typical features of original naval flags

WHY THIS FLAG IS SPECIAL

• Genuine nautical artifact — not a reproduction
• Made of real naval wool, extremely hard to find today
• Historically tied to USSR–Jordan maritime routes
• Collectible for naval historians, Middle East collectors, and flag experts
• Beautiful display piece with deep cultural and historical value

OFFICIAL STAR PROPORTIONS (STATE FLAG OF JORDAN)

On the official national flag of Jordan:

– The star has 7 points
– The center of the star is positioned at approximately 1/3 of the length of the red triangle
– The diameter of the imaginary circle around the star is about

13 of the flag’s height\frac{1}{3} \text{ of the flag’s height}

– The star’s points are long and thin, with sharp angles
– The star does not touch the edges of the red triangle

WHAT CAN BE SEEN ON YOUR FLAG (HISTORICAL MARITIME FLAG)

From the photo:

– The star is 7‑pointed — correct
– The points are wider, thicker, and shorter than on the modern state flag
– The star appears larger than the official proportion — approximately

12 of the triangle’s height\frac{1}{2} \text{ of the triangle’s height}

– The center of the star is slightly shifted forward and downward (typical for naval flags)
– The star is placed closer to the edges of the triangle and occupies more internal area

WHY THESE DIFFERENCES EXIST

This is characteristic of:

maritime flags,
wool naval flags,
flags produced in the USSR in the 1970s–1980s using the cold batik dyeing method.

Such flags followed their own production standards, which often differed from the proportions used on civilian national flags.
