This original 5 x 7 inch black and white photograph was taken and developed by Thomas Schmidler in New York City in 1980. The composition captures a candid moment of a woman walking across the street, bundled in a coat and carrying a bag, while the blurred motion of cars passes behind her. To the right, the reflection of a bold advertisement reading “IF IT CONCERNS” in large block letters adds a layered visual element, contrasting the immediacy of the pedestrian with the static commercial imagery.

Thomas Schmidler (1933–1991), a fine-art photographer and printmaker, developed all of his work in his own darkroom. His New York photographs often combine the energy of the city’s people with its architectural and cultural backdrops, producing images rich in both narrative and atmosphere.
