An apparent free front-end page from a book with an inscription addressed to Dashiell Hammett and signed by Harry Haywood, dated April 20, 1950. A single sheet 5 1/8” x 8” inscribed “To Dashiell Hammett, with warmest fraternal greetings.” Harry Haywood and Dashiell Hammett were contemporaries who shared an affiliation with the Communist Party, USA, though their roles within the movement and their respective fields were very different. Haywood was a prominent African American Communist and theorist on racial oppression, while Hammett was a celebrated hard-boiled detective novelist. Autographs of Harry Haywood are few and far between. Judging by the sheet size, it came from a book and possibly the Dashiell Hammett estate. Unique.
