Holmes Edward Offley (1839-1919): Served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, earning a Gold Star. In April, 1865, he was appointed Secretary to Admiral Louis Goldsborough and promoted to Lieutenant. His personal papers and memoirs are housed in Theodore Roosevelt Center, whom Offley befriended in his later years.

 In Very Good+ condition with a strong spine showing no cracking or splitting, strong hinges showing no separation or starting, firm corners and end-caps, and no annotations or mold. Outer covers show some general rubbing and shelf-wear; rubbing to the corners and edges with some exposure; two small surface nicks on the bottom edge of front board; wear to the foot and crown of spine; reading wear to the front hinges, but no separation or starting; occasional foxing to the inner pages. All in all a handsome example.
