This auction is for a wonderful large antique leather hardcover book titled “Antique Portrait Gallery of Eminent Men and Women of Europe and America” Volume I by American publisher and biographer Evert Augustus Duyckinck (1816–1878). Please note that this auction is for Volume I only of the original two-volume set. We do not have Volume II. The book is substantial with 640 numbered pages and 46 highly finished steel engravings “from original portraits by the most celebrated artists” of the day including Benjamin West, Alonzo Chappel, Marie-Eleonore Godefroid, Paul Delaroche, Charles Lucy, Alexander Nasmyth, and many others. The subjects of the portraits were as the title implies, in the company of the most impressive men and women of their eras and specialties, whether that be statesmanship, revolution, and war; science and invention; literature and artistry of the visual and performative varieties; monarchy and, in some cases, its accompanying infamy; and/or philosophy, among other endeavors.

The cover title is the variant that is set in the less common ornamental and more Gothic typeface, as compared to the primary version most commonly seen. It is marked in gilt as follows: PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT MEN AND WOMEN OF EUROPE AND AMERICA. The title page is marked as follows: PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT MEN AND WOMEN OF EUROPE AND AMERICA. EMBRACING HISTORY, STATESMANSHIP, NAVAL AND MILITARY LIFE, PHILOSOPHY, THE DRAMA, SCIENCE, LITERATURE AND ART. WITH BIOGRAPHIES. BY EVERT A. DUYCKINCK, AUTHOR OF “PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT AMERICANS,” CYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN LITERATURE,” “HISTORY OF THE WAR FOR THE UNION,” ETC., ETC. ILLUSTRATED WITH HIGHLY FINISHED STEEL ENGRAVINGS FROM ORIGINAL PORTRAITS BY THE MOST CELEBRATED ARTISTS. IN TWO VOLUMES.—VOL. 1. NEW YORK: JOHNSON, WILSON AND COMPANY, 27 BEEKMAN STREET. PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT MEN AND WOMEN. WITH BIOGRAPHIES. BY E. A. DUYCKINCK. VOL. 1. JOHNSON, WILSON AND COMPANY, 27 BEEKMAN STREET. ENTERED ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGRESS A.D. 1872 BY JOHNSON, FRY AND CO. IN THE OFFICE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS AT WASHINGTON.

As noted, the book contains 46 highly detailed full-page steel engravings. We have included photos of nearly three-quarters of the portraits, so be sure to scroll down to view the additional two dozen images of the book beyond the equal number in the ebay gallery (48 pictures total). The list of steel portrait engravings included are listed as follows: SAMUEL JOHNSON; OLIVER GOLDSMITH; HANNAH MORE; FREDERICK II; EDWARD GIBBON; MARIE ANTOINETTE; DAVID GARRICK; GEORGE WASHINGTON; MADAME D’ARBLAY; EDMUND BURKE; SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS; MARTHA WASHINGTON; BENJAMIN FRANKLIN; ROBERT BURNS; CHARLOTTE CORDAY; JOHANN WOLFGANG GOETHE; JOHN PHILIP KEMBLE; ABIGAIL ADAMS; GILBERT-MOTIER DE LAFAYETTE; THOMAS JEFFERSON; MARIA EDGEWORTH; FRIEDRICH SCHILLER; HENRY GRATTAN; SARAH VAN BRUGH JAY; NAPOLEON BONAPARTE; ROBERT FULTON; MADAME DE STAEL; HORATIO NELSON; JOHN PHILPOT CURRAN; JANE AUSTEN; WILLIAM WILBERFORCE; GEORGE STEPHENSON; SARAH SIDDONS; ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT; WALTER SCOTT; DOROTHY PAYNE MADISON; LORD BROUGHAM; LORD BYRON; ELIZABETH FRY; ROBERT PEEL; WILLIAM WORDSWORTH; FELICIA DOROTHEA HEMANS; DUKE OF WELLINGTON; THOMAS MOORE; LYDIA HUNTLEY SIGOURNEY; and ANDREW JACKSON.

The book has a total of 640 numbered pages and is fairly large and heavy. It measures roughly 11 1/4” x 9 1/4” x 2 1/2” and weighs roughly 7 lbs 1.7 oz. We believe its size puts it roughly in the 4to quarto size range, and its heaviness puts it squarely in the “use a book rest” weight range. And you will want to rest your wrists exploring this content-rich volume, enjoying the portraits as you read through the fascinating biographies shared by Evert A. Duyckinck. The book’s covers exhibit aging, wear, scratches, scuffs, scrapes, gouge marks, nicks, peeling, fading, edge wear, bending and/or warping, dirty and/or stained areas, worn and/or bumped corners, and some splitting on the front cover near the upper spine area.
