Up for auction is this Freeport, New York, Charter #7703, $10.00 1929 Type-1 Small Size National, Fr. #1801-1, with treasury signatures of Edward E. Jones as Register of the Treasury and Walter O. Woods as Treasurer of The United States.  The cashier of this bank is William F. Kraft Jr. and the President of the bank is Ernest S Randall.

This bank chartered in April of 1905 as “The First National Bank of Freeport, New York”.  The bank changed its title to “The First National Bank And Trust Company of Freeport, New York” on July 8, 1926.  This Bank lasted all the way through the end of the National Banknote issuing period, which ended in May of 1935 when FDR shut it down.  The bank issued 63,390 small size Nationals, from 1929 thru May 1935.  Freeport had a total of two Currency issuing National Banks.  Both National Banks issued Small Size Series 1929 Nationals.  This bank was the easier to find of the two banks.  If you are looking for one National Banknote to cover the town, this would be the easier one to find!

The note has a tight bottom margin and is cut into the holding line at the bottom right.  The reverse of the note has fairly even margins all around.  There are strong vertical folds at the quarters, multiple lesser vertical folds  as well as horizontal folds at the center of the note.  The paper retains some brightness for the grade.  There is a small amount of dirt on both sides of the note from years of circulation.  I see no rips or pinholes in this note, but I do see one very small split 1/16th of an inch split in the top margin just above the “N” in National Currency.  This split really does not affect the note in any material way, but I mention them strictly for accuracy.  I would grade this note as solid Very Fine. Please look at the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality of this note for yourself before bidding.  The Kelly Census shows 61 small size notes reported on this bank. There are 9 - $5.00 Type-1’s, 18 - $10.00 Type-1’s, 12 - $20.00 Type-1’s, 8 - $5.00 Type - 2, 8- $10.00 Type-2’s. and 6 - $20.00 Type-2’s.  This note is new to the census, the new owner can report it if they so choose.

This note would make a fine addition to any New York State banknote collection.  The bank was located in Nassau County Long Island, so it should appeal to those collecting that County.  Long Island National Banknotes have traditionally been a hotly collected part of New York State!    Don’t let this note get away!
