This auction is for what we believe to be a vintage paper monumental brass vault grave marker rubbing of an unidentified English noble couple that we assume to be husband and wife. We are unsure when this rubbing was created but believe it to be vintage (it came from the estate of a man who visited England in the 1960s). The gentleman is wearing a full suit of plate armor and is standing with a woman wearing what appears to be an English hood gable headdress and fur-cuffed gown tied around the waist with a girdle. Both have their hands in a prayer position. Judging by their garb we believe the couple’s vault likely dates to the early Tudor period around the turn of the 16th century.
We do not know what type of medium was used to create this rubbing. We are guessing that the paper that was used is some sort of parchment paper or vellum. The entire rubbing measures roughly 25 1/4” x 25 1/4”. The actual size of the 2 images measures roughly 18” from top to bottom. The item has edge wear, wrinkles, creases, and a couple of small smudge type marks which is to be expected with this type of art process (see pictures). There are also 4 tack holes, one in each of the corners. One of these tack holes has a small tear in it.
