Houston Hurricane were a professional soccer team which played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for three seasons from 1978-80. Established as part of the NASL's expansion into large Southern markets, the Hurricane played home matches at the Astrodome and had ties to the English club Sheffield United. The team achieved a successful division winning 22–8 record in 1979 under coach Timo Liekoski. Despite enjoying success on the pitch, anemic attendance figures and limited local involvement led to the franchise dissolving after the 1980 season.

North American Soccer League (NASL) was a professional soccer league which operated from 1968 to 1984, popularizing the sport in the United States and Canada. The NASL received substantial attention by attracting major international stars such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Gerd Muller and George Best, which assisted in elevating the profile of soccer in geographic locales dominated by other team sports.

During its peak in the late '70s and early '80s, the NASL fielded teams in virtually all major North America cities, laying down the groundwork for awareness and growth of professional soccer on the continent. The trailblazing league was integral in establishing a foundation for the Major League Soccer (MLS), which launched in 1996, and has since gone on to become the premier soccer league in the region.
