1949 Lancaster Red Roses Scorecard

Bill Ripken (Cal Ripken Jr.’s Uncle) – Minor League History

Original 1949 official scorecard from the Lancaster Red Roses, a team in the Class B Interstate League. This game featured a young Bill Ripken, uncle of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and younger brother of longtime Orioles coach and manager Cal Ripken Sr. Bill Ripken is listed on the roster and appears as both outfielder and pinch-hitter (“Ripken cf” and “Ripken ph-cr”).

The scorecard is filled out in pencil for a game dated July 9, with full batting and pitching annotations and clear scoring by hand.  The Red Roses beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 8-3 according to the hand kept score card. Al Campanis, who would later become GM of the Dodgers, is listed as manager. The booklet includes heavy local advertising and schedules, with a colorful patriotic WGAL-sponsored front cover.

A scarce and collectible piece of minor league and Ripken family history.
