These are new, cast and hand-finished, sterling silver earrings by Kwakwaka'wakw/Carrier/Cree Northwest First Nations artist Carrie Matilpi. Each earring measures 3/4" in diameter. These earrings depict a beautiful Sun face design.
In many Northwest Coast myths, the Sun is seen as the provider of healing energy, beauty and life. The Sun was put into the sky by Raven, and its rays are our means of travel between earth and sky.
Carrie Matilpi holds Kolus, or Baby Thunderbird, as her crest, and works in the Kwakwaka'wakw style. Known for her gold and silver jewellery, Carrie learned to engrave from her father, Charles Harper. She has been carving since 1996, and often works with her sister, Victoria Harper.
