But with Yamaha’s SB2J Silent Brass System for Euphonium — the latest generation of the tool — awkward interactions with your neighbors can be kept to a minimum. Thanks to proprietary Brass Resonance Modeling technology, you can practice like you’re in a deserted concert hall without anyone else knowing. This 3-piece system includes the Pickup Mute for nearly silent playing, a Personal Studio beltpack, and a pair of earbuds to immerse yourself in beautifully modeled sound. Updates to this new model include a micro USB connection, a new player and audience mode, and an electric condenser microphone. Pickup Mute silences your instrument

The first and arguably most important part of the Silent Brass system is the pickup mute. It dramatically reduces the volume of your horn. It has a pickup mounted inside to capture your sound and transfer it to the Personal Studio Beltpack. Typically, practice mutes add tons of resistance, making you feel like you’re playing into a pool noodle. The designers at Yamaha built the Pickup Mute from the ground up to lessen resistance. Players around Sweetwater are happy to announce that Yamaha has made playing with a mute feel incredibly natural! Best of all, the electronics within the mute are powered by the Personal Studio beltpack, so you never have to worry about maintaining multiple sets of batteries.

Note: The Pickup Mute’s onboard electronics are only compatible with Yamaha’s Personal Studio beltpack. Connecting to other devices may damage your system.

Brass Resonance Modeling supplies a natural tone

Silent Brass’s tone comes courtesy of proprietary Brass Resonance Modeling technology. It works in two parts. First, the software applies digital signal processing to the mute’s microphone to reverse the effects of the mute. Next, it adds ambience akin to an unmuted instrument with two reverb types to choose from. From there, the system adjusts the left/right balance to create a virtual stage that sounds just like a large room or concert hall. With the onboard Brass Resonance Modeling, you’ll sound like you’re playing unmuted all the time. With this model, you’ll be able to switch freely between the personal sound setting and the balanced stereo setting, allowing you to hear what you’d sound like to an audience.

Personal Studio beltpack

The low-profile Personal Studio beltpack serves up those sumptuous tones. Onboard, you can select from two reverb types (Room, Hall) to tailor your sound to your liking. There’s also an auxiliary jack so you can practice along with your favorite songs. That’s not all that Personal Studio can do for you. You can use the headphone output to record your practice session straight into your DAW or mobile recorder! Whether you play sitting down or standing up, Personal Studio’s belt clip lets you practice however you want.
