HOW IT WORKS: Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)-typing is used to confirm or exclude the possibility of celiac disease.

 

THE STANDARD CELIAC TEST examines the 2 alleles belonging to the HLA family related to celiac disease. The DQ2.5*02 genetic variant, present in 90-95% of celiac subjects and the DQ8, *0302 genetic variant, present in the remaining 5-10% of celiac subjects are evaluated. The DNA test effectively rules out (>99%) the disease if no HLA-DQ2/DQ8 risk types are detected. We also offer an Extended test where we will test 16 markers in the HLA system:

 

THE EXTENDED CELIAC TEST EXAMINES the 16 alleles belonging to the HLA family related to celiac disease: DQA1*01, DQA1*02:01, DQA1*03, DQA1*05, DQA1*06, DQB1*02, DQB1*03:01, DQB1*03:02, DQB1*03:03, DQB1*03:04, DQB1*03:05, DQB1*04, DRB1*03, DRB1*04, DRB1*07, DRB1*11. It gives the attribution to a risk class ranging from high to very low.

 

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STANDARD & EXTENDED TESTS:

In short, in case of positivity, the standard test (with 2 markers) requires confirmation with a serological test or an intestinal biopsy, whilst the extended test (with 16 markers), on the other hand, gives the attribution to a risk class ranging from high to very low.

 

In case of negativity, with the standard test the celiac disease diagnosis is highly unlikely. The negative predictive value is greater than 99%, whilst with the extended test, this can even be considered as a diagnostic test, and you can rest assured that you will never suffer from celiac disease.
