In the muscle car heyday, a tilt steering wheel was a scarce reality saved for luxury cars and exotics. If you did not fit well between the steering wheel and the seat tough cookies! It does not have to be that way today for your muscle car or street rod. Get behind the wheel and drive again in comfort with a Speedway Motors Universal GM Tilt Steering Column.
Do not let our product name scare you either! The "GM"is referring to the electrical connection type and steering shaft spline for the steering wheel. This column can just as easily fit into a Dodge, Ford, or any other project you may be building with just a little effort adapting the wiring to your vehicle and picking up a GM Steering Wheel Adapters for your aftermarket steering wheel of choice.
Old tilt columns are just that-old! Do not waste your time in a salvage yard digging around for a steering column for your project that will undoubtably need a complete rebuild. Not to mention it most likely will be too long or too short for your application.
Using one of our universal tilt steering columns is the way to go. This is not just any old aftermarket steering column either. Manufactured with all new parts in a compact design, they will literally fit most anywhere. The small 2-inch diameter steering column tube and compact tilt head that is just 7-inches in length provides copious amounts of leg room while fitting nicely within most any dash.
The five-position tilt head allows 30 degrees of tilt, 20 degrees up and 10 degrees down from straight. This tilt function not only provides the perfect angle for personal driving comfort but can facilitate easier ingress/egress with a simple flick of the tilt lever.
Our tilt steering columns are modeled after the GM 1969-1994 specifications for steering wheel spline, turn signal wiring, and more (making them a near-drop-in replacement for these years). We do upgrade the GM double-D (DD) steering shaft output from the OE .985 inches to a true 1-inch DD dimension for better compatibility with aftermarket Steering U-joints and shafts for connecting to your steering box or steering rack.
Our Universal GM Tilt Steering Column arrives in a plain steel finish ready to be painted to your specific interior color scheme and ships with cleanly styled chrome-plated control levers for the turn signal switch, tilt mechanism, and hazard light switch. The 2-inch OD column tube allows it to be easily secured to your dash using the original mount or a universal column mount. We offer Upper and Lower Steering Column Mounts to aid in your installation.
The standard GM steering wheel spline means any 1969-1994 GM steering wheel is a direct fit, or you can purchase a Steering Wheel Adapters to aid in fitting your 3-, 5-, or 9-bolt wheel to your new column. Our steering wheel adapter Speedway Toolbox Steering Wheel Adapters Buyer's Guide will help you find the proper fit.
Our Universal Tilt Steering Column uses GM steering column wiring connectors. The standard 3-7/8-inch turn signal switch connector even uses stock GM wire color codes. This makes our column a direct plug-and-play electrical connection to millions of GM vehicles or just about any vehicle that has been upgraded with an Aftermarket Chassis Wiring Harnesses. For non-GM vehicles with factory wiring, you can easily adapt your turn signal wiring by crimping on a new GM 3-7/8-inch Turn Signal Switch Connector to match the OE Chevy steering column wiring connector.
If a fixed steering column is preventing you from enjoying your ride, then upgrade to our Universal GM Tilt Steering Column today and drive your vehicle in comfort. Your knees will thank you for it!

Summary: Lots of modifications required. Mount, lower connector, ignition switch relocated. Took a lot to actually fit my 70 camero. Otherwise good price and quality.
Yes, I recommend this product.
Summary: It obviously is not a 1k+ name brand column, but for what it costs it's a great unit. I installed in a '72 nova , paired with a 3.75 inch long (13/16-1"DD) coupler it left my steering wheel (grant deep dish style) right where I like it. Keys will stick a little when cranking, turn signal is a bit hard when you tighten your steering wheel, and mounts are left to the user to figure out. This is for the guy who doesn't mind doing a bit of fab and is willing to live with some minor nuisance in order to save $600+ If I had to do it again and wasn't in a hurry to get the car going , I would buy the keyless version, and put a nice starter button or key switch in the dash or console.
Yes, I recommend this product.
