DESCRIPTION: Three volume set of Gibbon's monumental, landmark 18th century history of ancient Rome, from 180 CE to 1453 CE, published in the famous Modern Library edition. Volumes are roughly 900 pages each, with Volume 1 (G6) spanning A.D. 180 to 395, Volume 2 (G7) spanning 395 to 1185, and Volume 3 (G8) taking in the years 1185 to the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. 

Publication date is based on the "Collecting the Modern Library" website, which details the pricing history of the Library and gives only 1947 as a date in which the Modern Library Giant editions were published at $1.95 each.  

CONDITION: Volume 1: JACKET : Minor chipping to head and tail and edges of the jacket. NOT price clipped. scuffing to the back of this jacket, small stain, slight sticker damage (see photo). Jacket now protected in a mylar library-grade non-permanent cover. BOOK: Red cloth boards show light wear, previous seller's pricing notation in pencil on flyleaf, contents appear clean and unmarked.

Volume 2: JACKET:   Minor chipping to head and tail and edges of the jacket. NOT price clipped. scuffing to the back of this jacket, faint stain to the lower rear panel, (see photo). Jacket now protected in a mylar library-grade non-permanent cover. BOOK: Red cloth boards show light wear, previous seller's pencil notation "3 vols." on flyleaf, contents appear clean and unmarked, save for slight possible damp mark to the bottom of the pages which does not effect readability or overall aesthetic. Page 309-310 lower outside corner is correctly printed but folded at some point in the binding process back into the text block, when folded back out appears as untrimmed - you may clip or trim as you see fit.

Damp marks slightly visible on the top of this volume, in the dark blue page edging.
