These needles are from the many boxes of threads, needles, beaded bags, beads and remnants of pieces that were repaired over the decades at my grandmothers needlework school in Manhattan, LaMers Studio 1909-1967 (see photos) !! Often customers would bring in items for repair, and after they received the insurance money, as many of the wealthy customers insured their items, they would not return to pick up the piece. Women from around the world, mostly France, Germany and Switzerland would come to learn the skills of reweaving any fabric, repairing clothes, table clothes, and making beaded dresses, bags, shoes and jewelry. She had a thriving business during the depression of the 1930's when she catered to the wealthy who desired such beaded fashions. Some of her customers whom I have letters from were Nat King Cole, he was a heavy smoker and always burning his suits, Alice Tully of Lincoln Center, Henry Ford, yes THE Henry Ford, and Eleanor Roosevelt to name a few. She was quite the business woman at a time when women didn't own their own businesses. She was an artist with a needle and thread. * Happy to include cards and ephemera from LaMers Studio, just drop me a note !
