Description

Calea Zacatechichi, also known as Mexican dream herb, is a small white flowering shrub found throughout select regions of Mexico and central America.

Calea Telifornica and Calea Zacatechichi are in fact the same species, the latter being the Hispanic term stemming from the indigenous name of the plant. The herb is also known as bitter grass for its famously bitter taste.

The herbal has been used therapeutically for various ailments and for it’s onirogenic properties.

The locals often brew the leaves, flowers and even the roots of the plant ceremonially in tea or simply smoke the herbal to connect with the divine holy spirits through it’s dream boosting affects.

Some scientific studies suggest potential nootropic properties and enhancement in dream recall for this Calea Zacatechichi plant.

Mechanism of action

A multitude of therapeutic alkaloids such as Chlorogenic acid, Rutin and various flavonoids have been identified in this holy herb and are likely responsible for the herbs hypoglycaemic properties.

Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol found in coffee, black tea and a confirmed acetylcholine esterase inhibitor with neuroprotective affects.

Calea Zacatechichi contains another compounds called Rutin, a glycoside molecule naturally occurring in other plants such as buckwheat and rhubarb.

Studies have confirmed that both Rutin and Chlorogenic acid are strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents.

The exact mechanism of how Calea Zacatechichi induces dreaming is unknown and unfortunately, there has been very scientific research and literature on this issue. However, we speculate the herbs high Chlorogenic acid concentration could be responsible for this activity. Chlorogenic acid is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that causes acetylcholine activity in the brain to increase and it its this brain activity in the Neocortex and Hippocampus that are so strongly associated with dreaming and sleep.
