Description

California Poppy, Eschscholzia Californica, is a beautiful golden petaled, perennial plant, growing up to 1.5 meters in height. The plant and it’s close relatives are native to the grasslands of California, Mexico and Oregon.

The Genus and was named after the German botanist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz and includes 12 separate species.

This beautiful plant has a long history of use throughout native American tribes where the herb is widespread, often used for it’s sedative/hypnotic and analgesic properties.

Mechanism of action

There are a variety of medicinally active alkaloids isolated from this plant, such as protopine, allocryptopine and aporphine. 

Various studies have proven these alkaloids function as serotonin 5HT1A receptor antagonists, whereas Protopine and allocryptopine are weak GABAa receptor agonists and acetylcholine esterase inhibitors.
