DESCRIPTION: Here is an uncommon mid 19th century Czech Prague porcelain cup and saucer. Hand painted with a circular floral pattern that includes pink roses, red, yellow and blue flowers with a gilt leaf swag through the center. In between the floral decorations there are trailing gilt leaf patterns. The cup of bulbous form has a scrolled shape handle that is gilded down the back and to each side. The saucer is in the same pattern but has a different gilt pattern to the central well. The cup is marked to the base with an impressed Gothic P and number 2. The saucer is impressed to the base with a Gothic Prag and number 3. The makers marks were used from 1837 (first year of porcelain production) to 1841.
SIZES: The cup measures 7.5 cm to top of handle and 8.1 cm in diameter. The saucer measures 14 cm in diameter. Weighs 246 g before packing.
CONDITION: The cup from top to bottom. The outside top rim is worn all around. The gilt band to the inside top rim has a little gilt ware as per pictures. The handle has gilt ware to the highest point of the scroll and a little down the edges. There is a mark inside the cup which is under the glaze so done in the manufacture. The outside of the foot rim is worn all around. The painted floral pattern is all intact.
The saucer has some gilt ware to the band around the well and slightly to the central gilt pattern. The outside top rim has gilt ware all the way round with the inner gilt inside the top band also with gilt ware all around but not too severe. Two gilt leaf swags are worn to two leaves on the left hand end across the painted floral decoration.
Despite the gilt ware it does not detract too much from this unusual cup and saucer.
