USS Indianola is a river armored ship which was built by Joseph Brown in Cincinnati, Ohio state in 1862th for service on the Mississippi and its tributaries. On January 14, 1863, it was put into operation, on Janyary 23, 1863 in Cairo, Illinois state joined the fleet of Rear Admiral David Porter.
Soon Indianola was sent down the Mississippi to block the estuary of the Red River. The first battle of Indianola took place on the night of February 13-14th, 1863, when the ship was able to pass Vicksburg under the fire of shore batteries.
On February 24, Indianola, lying at anchor about 30 miles to the south of Vicksburg, was attacked by CSS Queen of the West and CSS Webb. The ship received significant damage and sank in the shallows. On the captured by the Southerners Indianola the repair work was started. To prevent Indianola from being included into the enemy’s forces, Rear Admiral Porter sent a river barge to the ship flooding place, disguised as a monitor. Mystification succeeded. The Confederates, having learned about the presence of an armored ship, blew up Indianola on March 4, 1863.
