His detailed and appealing plates adorned numerous published works, including A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland and the monumental English Botany. In collaboration with botanist James Edward Smith, Sowerby's 36-volume opus, English Botany, featured an astounding 2,592 hand-colored engravings, becoming a botanical reference of unparalleled scope. His illustrations, characterized by vivid colors and meticulous accuracy, aimed to reach a wide audience, bridging the gap between science and art.
