This vintage nativity set includes three hand-painted Wise Men, representing the Arabian, Ethiopian, and Persian Kings who visited the baby Jesus. The intricate hand painted details of the figures make them perfect for collectors or for display during the holiday season. The set was painted in 1974 and initialed by the artist. The mold is from Creative Paradise Molds Inc, in the United States.
These Wise Men took time and patience to create 50 years ago. The artist first had to trim and blend the seams on the green ware, then have it fired in a kiln. This would become the white bisque we are familiar with. Next glaze (paint) was added and a second firing would occur. Finally a third fire would be done after gold details were added.
Each figurine weighs 1.8 lbs and is about 10 inches in height, with a diameter of approximately 5 inches. These Kings make a beautiful addition to any nativity display. This is a rare and unique set.
All pieces show their age and have some crazing. The Arabian King in the teal robe has a chip on his right side, please refer to pictures. The Persian King's gift in the dusty rose and olive green robe has come away from the chain, but is not broken. It can be re- glued. It too is pictured.
As a potter I am amazed at the detail and care taken to paint these 3 Wise Men.
