Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum)

  • Description: Garlic chives, also known as Chinese chives, have flat, strap-like green leaves with a mild garlicky flavor. They produce small, star-shaped white flowers.
  • Growing:
    • Location: Full sun to partial shade.
    • Soil: Well-draining, nutrient-rich soil.
    • Care: Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. They are drought-tolerant once established.
    • Propagation from Seed: Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after frost. Cover lightly with soil and keep moist. Germination takes 7-14 days.
  • Edible Parts: Leaves, flower stalks, and unopened flower buds.
  • Uses: As a garnish, in stir-fries, dumplings, soups, or omelets. The flowers can also be used as an edible garnish.
