This is for a 3" x 2.5" PATCH that reads: POINT SUR LIGHT STATION - [CALIFORNIA] HISTORICAL LANDMARK NO. 951.

NNO. 951. POINT SUR LIGHT STATION - Spanish explorers and later New England hide and tallow traders found the Big Sur coastline a great hazard. Heavy fogs and extreme winds caused the wreck of many vessels on this coast. The gold rush of 1849 dramatically increased coastal shipping. A lighthouse was clearly needed. President Andrew Johnson signed the Executive Order which reserved the site for lighthouse purposes in 1866. Construction began in 1887 and the lamp was lit on August 1, 1889.

The Light Station includes the Point Sur Lighthouse and several other associated buildings. 

The California State Parks Anniversary Committee (CSPAC) has created a series of California Historic Landmark patches.  
CSPAC is licensed to produce official state parks logo items and is a state parks vendor. 

California Historical Landmarks (CHL) are sites, buildings, features, or events that are of statewide significance and have anthropological, cultural, military, political, architectural, economic, scientific or technical, religious, experimental, or other value. The specific standards now in use were first applied in the designation of Landmark # 770.   The CHL program is operated by California State Parks. 

California Historical Landmarks, and Points of Historical Interest are eligible for directional markers. State highway signs are ordered, erected and maintained by the California Department of Transportation for the state highways under their jurisdiction.

To be designated as a California Historical Landmark, a resource must meet at least one of the criteria listed below; have the approval of the property owner(s); be recommended by the State Historical Resources Commission; and be officially designated by the Director of California State Parks.
