I’m downsizing and selling many many items from my home that my husband and I have collected over the past 50 years. We absolutely loved books and the library is filled with every imaginable book and the earliest one I have is from the 1600s. My husband passed away and I am downsizing and can’t possibly take all these books with me so I’m selling some of the very special ones. It’s not easy for me to do but I can’t take them all.

I did some research on this book and it appears this is quite rare… Canada in the very very early 1900s was printing some of these books but not very many, because Canada was not that populated apparently, according to my research.

The book is bound in a suede leather, imprinted in the suede in gold. It has what I think are 83 pages, in Roman numerals.

The paper has rough edges and each page is only printed on one side. There are several etchings ( the impression is seen on each etching) and some identify the illustrator as Gilbert James.

The book was bound by sewing and the front cover has separated from the inside spine. The pages are not ripped, written upon, or missing.

Around 1909, The Musson Book Co., Ltd. of Toronto, published an illustrated copy of FitzGerald’s 2nd edition (second version) of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám illustrated by Edmund Dulac.

Although this was a reprint of a 1909 book published by MacMillan in London, this book is considered to be the first Canadian Edition of FitzGerald’s Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam (see Figure 2).

Around this time, Musson also independently published at least two versions of the 1st edition of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám as translated by Edward FitzGerald that included illustrations by Gilbert James. Although their exact date of publication is not indicated, the subject, design and overall appearance of the books suggest publication prior to 1920 and possibly as early as 1910.

It is not known if any other versions or reprints of this book or any other editions have been published but these books represent the first documented Canadian-only publication of Edward FitzGerald’s Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. To date no other Canadian publications of Omar’s Rubáiyát by any other translator appear to have been identified during this early time period
